Can A Business Mentor Really Help You Become Successful?

Back in the day, direct marketing was really what we would call a “door-to-door” salesman or saleswoman. Some of the early direct selling companies were Avon, Tupperware, Shaklee, Amway and MaryKay. Over the years this industry has become increasingly popular because of the low cost to get involved and the flexibility it offers.

According to the Direct Selling Association (DSA), in 2016 20.5 million people in the United States were involved in direct sales, and 5.3 million were building an independent business through managing customers, sales and recruits Direct selling is not a new industry, but it’s seen a resurgence over the past few years as people are looking for opportunities to earn extra income or build a business outside a typical 9-5 job. Staring a direct sales business requires minimal start up costs but commitment, time and effort to become successful, just as it would building a company from the ground up.

As a direct seller you’re an entrepreneur and your own boss. Benefits include working when, where and how to you so you can be present for your family and pursue other interests. The majority of people in direct sales work from a home office, which presents its own unique set of challenges: scheduling work versus home time and keeping your business organized without having someone help you manage your time. There is a plethora of information available in written form, online and in books, but having a dialog with someone who has had similar experiences, made mistakes and continued to be successful is invaluable. A mentor can help you develop your own business voice and direction, and everyone, from the person just starting out to the leader of a large organization, benefits from mentoring. Here are four reasons you can benefit from a mentor or a business coach.

1. Identifying How to be Successful

12 Summer Survival Beauty Hacks

Beat the heat and stay fresh, clean and natural with these makeup and body care hacks.

  • For the smoothest legs before a night out or big event, use Body Polish as a pre-shaving treatment, by applying and exfoliating your skin with the polish, then rinsing off the sugar and using the excess oils as a shave cream. Try Pomegranate, Midnight Orchid, Pink Champagne or Coconut Lime Vanilla.
  • Stop lipstick from bleeding by lining the outer edge of your lips using Neutral Concealing Stick and blend outward with the Foundation Concealer Brush.
  • Run out of lip balm? Grab your Organic Skin & Nail Balm or Nursing Balm and apply to lips after a day in the sun.
  • Don’t let your Sheer Minerals Makeup melt away! After applying your mineral makeup, set with a few sprays of Mineral Setting Spray then use the Blending Sponge and Matte Veil, Pink Veil or your Mineral Foundation to dab away any oil or shine.
  • Keep Eye Liner Pencil from smearing by lightly dusting Matte Veil or Pink Veil under the eye to absorb sweat and hold the line in place.
  • Make your Hydrating Body Spritz do double duty to freshen skin and hair! Tame frizz by spraying a couple squirts on your hand and gently smooth hair. Plus, use Hydrating Body Spritz as a detangler after swimming. Try Coconut Cream, Strawberry Lemonade or Grapefruit Lily. Refrigerate for a fragrant, refreshing mist.
  • Sooth razor burns with Healing Elements Balm, Prebiotic Facial Mist or Organic Skin & Nail Balm.
  • Tone down a red nose from sunburn with Green Corrector Concealing Stick first, apply foundation next then use Honey Glow Bronzer instead of blush.
  • Sweat stains are the pits! Try one of these 3 natural stain removers. Avoid use with delicate fabrics like silk, and patch test a small area of dark colored fabric to ensure treatment won’t bleach garment.
    • Soak the stained area in vinegar. Whites and light colors: use equal parts cold water and vinegar. Dark colors: use equal parts warm water and vinegar. Rinse and let dry before laundering.
    • Cut a lemon in half and rub cut side on stain, squeezing little juice into the stain. Air dry and apply more as needed. Wash as normal.
    • Sprinkle baking soda on stained area. Allow to dry and brush off baking soda. Repeat as needed until stain fades. Wash as normal.
  • Keep Mineral Setting Spray in a cooler or the refrigerator to cool, hydrate and freshen your face throughout the day. Perfect for a BBQ or other outdoor event.
  • Cool a sunburn by applying Prebiotic Facial Mist first followed by Whipped Body Butter once mist has soaked into skin.

Focus on the Positive! How-to Contour and Highlight

We have all seen the highlight contour tutorials. If you are intrigued and curious but hesitant and a little confused about the newest Sheer Minerals contouring and highlighting products and tools, we are here to help. It is really not as intimidating as some of the paint by numbers-looking videos and pictures make it appear.SheerMinerals_HowToContour_FB_no_text.jpg

The general rule of thumb with contouring and highlighting is to create or emphasize light and shadow. As I often reference in my blogs, it is face art. Light will bring things forth and dark will minimize or recess them. The eye will always go to the light. Think of highlighting as the “positive” and remember the eye will always “focus on the positive”.

If you have a round face and want to create cheekbones apply Contour Powder to the hollows of your cheeks (under your cheekbone) and Strobe Stick to the actual cheekbone and “apples” of your cheeks, thus creating the illusion that the hollows recede and the cheekbones pop out. If you have a round face and want it to appear more oval, imagine placing a paper oval cut out in front of your face. Any areas that would extend beyond the cut out, you would want to recede with shading. Focus the Strobe Stick on places light naturally shines like the center of your forehead, nose and chin. The result is a slimmer longer face. If your face is long and slim, focus your contour on the chin and forehead, which will in essence “shorten” the face.

For me, I would like my nose to appear longer and narrower, so I apply Contour Powder on either side of my nose and then put the focus (light) in a line down the bridge of my nose to the tip. This creates the illusion that the broader portions of my nose recede and the bridge and tip of my nose are more prominent.

The best contouring and strobing tip is: experiment. Apply your Contour Powder with the Foundation Concealer Brush, and then, use the Blending Sponge to apply and blend the Strobe Stick.

Men’s Skincare: Why & How in 4 Simple Steps

Men often have a different idea of skincare and take a different approach than women. They are still interested in how their skin looks or feels, but they typically don’t seem to be interested in the pampering side of a luxurious skincare routine. Encouraging the men in your life to keep up a skincare routine can be a little challenging. Here are a couple tips and tricks along with some excellent gift ideas to get them started.

Tip #1 - Keep it Simple

Don’t overwhelm him with a 5-step skincare routine. He will see taking care of his skin as a chore or just confusing, therefore, neglecting to do it all together. A simple bar of soap such as the Detoxifying Charcoal Face Bar Soap or Men’s Private Reserve Bar Soap, followed by a moisturizer like Men’s Essentials Aftershave Lotion or Men’s Private Reserve Hand & Body Lotion is an excellent skincare routine for most days.

Tip #2 - Multi-Purpose Products

Multi-use products are appealing to most men because it’s a one and done deal with their routine, so products that are designed to use for skin all over the body are perfect. Our Prebiotic 3-in-1 Wash in Men’s Essentials and Unscented can be used head to toe (hair, face and body). Men can also use Men’s Essentials Beard Oil as a multi-purpose product by adding a couple of drops into their Men’s Essentials After-Shave Lotion to help alleviate extra dry and tight skin.

3. Mix your BB Crème with Sheer Minerals foundation for an airbrushed finish foundation. Remember to blend from your jawline into your neck for even color.

Detox Your Home with Essential Oil Cleaning Recipes

One of the easiest ways to eliminate toxins and synthetic chemicals from your home plus save money is by making your own cleaning solutions. Recipes are simple and use ingredients that are easy to find and affordable. You can find these base ingredients at most grocery stores or large online retailers:

  • Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) for grease, odors and dirt
  • Distilled vinegar for disinfecting (never mix vinegar with baking soda or hydrogen peroxide; avoid using on natural stone and wood surfaced)
  • Borax (sodium borate) solvent for grease, stains and grime
  • Washing soda (sodium carbonate) solvent for grease, mineral stains and dirt

  • Hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting

A variety of essential oils can be used for cleaning, but these six are often used for because of their purported antibacterial and germicidal properties:

  • Tea Tree
  • Lemon
  • Sweet Orange
  • Peppermint
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender

Keep soft, washable cloths on hand for wiping surfaces; many people recommend microfiber clothes, which you can usually purchase in bulk online.

4 Reasons Meditation is the Missing Piece to Overall Wellness

Meditation has been part of our spiritual journey for centuries, but it wasn’t until the 1960s meditation gained mainstream notoriety in the west as a means of self-improvement. In modern times, meditation has become a part of a well-rounded wellness routine along with healthy diet and regular exercise. Meditation is a simple concept: sit still, breathe deeply and focus on a single point or intention for a short amount of time. As easy as it sounds, it can be difficult to schedule time alone to practice or keep your mind from wandering to your mental to-do list. After reading how meditation can positively effect your mind and body, I promise you’ll want to clear your calendar for a mere ten minutes each day to receive all the mental and physical benefits meditation has to offer.

Anti-aging

Stress causes hormone imbalance, which in turn can manifest itself in skin problems like acne, dry skin and rash. Depending on severity, skin issues can negatively affect our self-esteem and perception of ourselves. Relaxation and meditation are well-documented remedies for reducing the body’s stress response.  Mediation can also reduce inflammatory promoting genes, which can decrease the skin’s signs of aging like wrinkles and dark spots. Studies have also shown meditation to reduce blood pressure and increase blood flow; increased blood flow boosts the amount of oxygen and nutrients carried to cells, overtime.

Pain Relief

Incorporating mindful meditation into your daily routine could have long-term positive effects for pain management. Chronic pain sufferers often rely on opioid treatments for pain management just to be able to complete basic daily tasks. There is a large list of long-term side effects of opiate use including addiction and liver or brain damage. A promising study published in the Journal of Neuroscience showed participants in the meditation group’s pain ratings decreased by up to 24% compared to the non-meditating participants.

How to Make Mom Feel Like a Million Bucks

Every woman wants to feel cherished, loved and appreciated. According to a survey done by the Daily Mail with 2,000 women in 2013, receiving a compliment from a friend or spouse was the biggest confidence booster, followed by having perfect hair and looking good in pictures.

The study revealed that having a good night's sleep, a cuddle, being told "I love you" and a smile from a stranger were also guaranteed to make a woman feel happy about herself.

It also found that four out of ten women get an immediate confidence boost if they look good in a photo. Another 40 percent say they feel great after getting a night of good sleep.

While 60 percent of women follow a strict beauty regime to ensure they leave the house feeling confident, 38 percent only need a cuddle from a child, partner, relative or friend to feel loved for the rest of the day.

Women also get an esteem boost when others ask them where they bought something they are wearing, such as a sweater or purse. Another thing women love is when they’re asked who their hairdresser is or what brand of makeup they use!

How to Treat Dry Skin

Before you can properly treat dry skin, you need to know what's causing it. Here are common reasons people experience dry, itchy skin along with some simple solutions.

Some people have a dry skin ‘type’ and will be more prone to dryness because of that. If you’d like to determine your skin type, click here. Another reason for dry skin is that it can be a condition of environmental factors such as heat, cold or wind. The last couple of ways you can develop dry skin is by using the wrong products for your skin type and there may be a lack of essential healthy fats in your diet. All of these factors can cause your skin to feel tight, look dull and become inflamed. This causes redness and irritation. The great news is when dry skin is treated correctly, it will be healthy without any negative side effects.

If you are born with dry skin (meaning you have little to no visible pores) maintaining a daily moisturizing skincare routine is essential. Dry skin produces little to no sebum, which acts as your skin’s physical protective barrier, allowing skin to become vulnerable. This can lead to chapped, red, sore, tight and uncomfortable skin. By having a moisturizing skincare routine every day you are adding that protective barrier back to your skin, leaving skin looking and feeling healthy. Lemongrass Spa Products provides excellent skincare products, such as gentle cleansers, like the Lavender Goat’s Milk Facial Soap, to avoid stripping the skin and powerful oils in both the Organic Anti Aging Serum and Green Tea Antioxidant Serum as well as the Gentle Face Crème and Face Crème with Botanicals to provide the protection it needs to look its best.

Environmental factors and using incorrect products for your skin type are all considered conditions. This addresses everyone who does not have dry skin as his or her skin type but still experiences dryness. Unlike your skin type, which cannot be changed, conditions are things that can change daily and effect the way your skin appears. For instance, you could have an oily skin type but live somewhere with extreme heat or cold during certain times of the year. Due to these environmental factors, you could start having symptoms of dry skin. The treatment for dry skin is to apply the right kind of nourishing oil. To correct this condition, simply add Organic Anti Aging Oil Serum to your routine during the specific times you are experiencing these conditions. Skin might become dry while traveling on beach vacations, ski trips or sitting on an airplane. What you want to avoid if you experience dry skin (but do not have the dry skin type) is changing your entire routine. If you change your skincare routine over to products that are made for dry skin, which is a common tendency, eventually they start breaking out from adding and over-using too much oil to their daily routine. This is why making sure you are using the correct products for your skin type at all times instead of changing to a different skincare routine is important. This same method is also applied to dry skin that experiences breakouts. You do not want to change your skincare routine to one for oily/acne prone skin when you experience a couple blemishes. In the long run this will cause your skin to become even more imbalanced and stripped. You simply want to spot-treat the breakouts with either diluted Tea Tree Essential Oil or Detoxifying Charcoal Face Mask . Making these simple changes can treat the different ways in which skin can become dry.

Healthy eating and self care are the most important and effective ways to keep skin in its best condition. If your skin type is dry, consulting with a nutritionist about adding healthy fats into your diet can tremendously improve any type of skin problem. Also keep in mind that certain medications and hormone imbalances can also cause dry skin. If you feel like you are experiencing dry skin due to either one of these issues, I recommend consulting with your doctor.

Ingredient Spotlight: Castor Oil

A highly versatile vegetable oil, castor oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds of the castor bean plant (ricinus communis), a native to Africa and India. Castor oil has been used for centuries and is an age-old remedy for medical and beauty maladies. Modern practitioners continue to use castor oil for its therapeutic benefits and as a laxative. It’s one of the first vegetable oils used in industrial applications because of its viscosity and lubricating ability, and is commonly used as a preservative on dry grains to help repel bugs.

Castor oil is extremely diverse and unique in its composition; it is able to withstand high temperatures without breaking down and maintains fluidity at both extremely high and low temperatures. Comprised of 90% ricinoleic acid plus oleic and linoleic fatty acids castor oil provides a myriad of topical benefits and is most known for:

  • Penetrating deep into skin, providing instant hydration and softening
  • Slowing the signs of aging by helping to stimulate collagen and elastin production
  • Fighting free radical damage
  • Acting as a carrier to transport other ingredients to the inner layers of the skin

Castor oil has long been used topically for anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal purposes. Although there are very few studies done in this area, antidotal evidence suggestions castor oil could help slow microbial growth and is often used in wound treatment.

The thick consistency and silky feel of castor oil makes it one of the top natural alternatives to petroleum jelly, making it an excellent option for lip products. Try the Organic Crème Lipstick, Organic Lip Gloss or handcrafted Lip Balm to protect and moisturize delicate skin. Castor oil is commonly used in the manufacturing of soaps because helps create a rich lather; try it in the new Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Soap. Believed to promote healthy circulation, castor oil can be found in products that can help relieve stress and tension such as the Cucumber Foot Soak.

Skin Detoxing with Activated Charcoal

Over the past couple of years, People have become more aware of what detoxing is and have found more helpful ways to aid their bodies in the process. Our bodies are naturally designed to detox, take in the good and eliminate the bad. The simple act of breathing in (bring in fresh oxygen) and breathing out (exhaling carbon dioxide) is detoxing. Since we now live in an overpolluted world from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the chemicals we put on our skin, sometimes our bodies become overloaded with toxins. When our bodies can not keep up with proper detoxing we start to suffer. Looking at this from the skin aspect you can suffer from conditions such as dark circles, acne, dullness, dehydration or even sallowness. There has been one ingredient effective at helping with the detoxing process, and it is activated charcoal.

Activated charcoal is a highly absorbent non-toxic substance. It is often given internally to people who suffer from poisoning because it has the ability to absorb the poison and safely eliminate it from the body. It works the exact same way for your skin. When using activated charcoal on your skin, it will draw pollution, chemicals and toxins off and safely eliminate them when you rinse with water. Below is a list of benefits that charcoal can have for your skin:

Benefits_of_Charcoal_500_x_600.jpg

Lemongrass Spa Products launched three new skincare products handcrafted with activated charcoal to help your skin detox. Incorporating these products into your skincare routine or using them all together once or twice a week, as a system will help liven up your skin. If you live in a city or suburb I would recommend using these more often as the exposure to pollution is much higher in those areas. Here are some ways you can incorporate each new product into your skincare to achieve healthier skin!

  • Detoxifying Charcoal Face Soap Replace the cleanser you use at night with this face soap. This will help detox from the environmental pollution your skin has absorbed throughout the day. Even if you work at home, stepping outside for a walk or running errands exposes you to pollution.
  • Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Polish Mixing activated charcoal with a gentle exfoliator is a double detox. Not only are you removing cell build up, but you’re also allowing the activated charcoal to work deeper when exfoliating. After you give this product a gentle scrub on your skin, allow it to sit for 1-2 minutes and let the activated charcoal absorb more before rinsing. Enhanced with acai berry and raspberry seed oil antioxidants, you’ll enjoy a subtle fruit essence upon application. This is perfect if you don’t have time to do a full-face mask or detox system. Include this once or twice a week into your routine.
  • Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Mask This is great to add to your routine when you have at least 10 minutes or more to allow it to work to its full capacity. If you chose to do your full detoxing routine once a week then apply this mask after you have used the Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Polish.

5 Anti-Aging Ingredients You Should be Using

Nature offers a bounty of botanicals to nourish, heal and thrive. We’re constantly reminded the importance of fueling our bodies with proteins, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids to maintain health, and what we feed our bodies effects the appearance of our skin. Aging is an integral part of life, but feeding the skin directly plays a key role in reducing the visible signs of aging in the skin.

Free radicals are produced through both natural processes and environmental stimulus and cause cells to breakdown over time, leading to signs of aging such as wrinkles and sagging skin. Antioxidants are anti-aging heroes sent to destroy free radicals and maintain skin’s elasticity, boost natural skin regeneration and reduce the signs of aging.

Here is a list of anti-aging superstars you should be using daily:

Argan Oil

Packed with vitamin E, essential fatty acids and antioxidants, argan oil works to improve texture by strengthening the bonding structures in skin, and improves appearance by fading dark spots. Argan oil seals in moisture, balances oil production and won’t clog pores.

A Case for Makeup

Many celebrities and “well-knowns” are ditching the makeup for an all-natural, no makeup look and being quite public about it. Defying what they call a skewed “public standard of beauty”. There is even a hashtag created for this movement: #nomakeup

I have encountered women who say, “I don’t wear makeup, I’m beautiful just the way I am!“ and to that I say, “Yes, you are!” But for me, and so many others I know, we love our makeup! Its fun, its transformative and in a way, a very personal art form! I like the concept of contours and highlights; putting light-catching shimmer here and there, playing with eye shadow that makes the color of my eyes look more intense and endlessly practicing, and to date, failing with winged eyeliner. Rather than being a conformist act of masking who I really am, or an insecurity with my naked face, I regard it as a personal expression, like a tattoo, only washable. I am totally intrigued by women who can chisel a cheekbone out of nothing but the color brown. That’s an ART! But many in the #nomakeup movement would translate this as not loving what you were given. I respectfully beg to differ. I confess I do appreciate hiding behind a little concealer when I have a break out (usually before family pictures or some sort of social soiree). Is this because I do not love myself? Is it because I am trying to aspire to an unattainable standard of beauty? No, it is because I am not fond of the angry, red third eye in the middle of my forehead. That is all.

Culturally and historically, men and women have done makeup or face painting for centuries for beauty, celebration, war, religion, to ward off diseases and protect from the sun. By the time Queen Cleopatra came to power in the 1st century BC, Egyptian women had at their disposal a whole array of cosmetics, all of which were made from rocks, minerals and plants in the region. Cleopatra used bright green and a deep blue eye shadow with gold-colored pyrite flecks. She darkened her eyebrows and lengthened her eyelashes. She used red ochre, a type of clay colored red by iron oxide for blush and lipstick.

The #nomakeup naturalist may claim the toxic brew of chemicals women put on their face as reasoning for their stance. Legitimate! But with Sheer Minerals by Lemongrass Spa, you need not worry.

I hardly think the use of makeup or lack thereof is worthy of a “movement”. My idea of a movement would be to accept all translations of beauty. If your look is a swipe of lip balm and a ponytail, you go girl! If you pile on eyeliner, practice on your wings or paint on a precise 40’s era red lip, fabulous!! Most of what brings out beauty comes from the inside out. With Lemongrass Spa and Sheer Minerals, you can paint your gorgeous palette safely and naturally to your hearts content or, if you prefer, simply moisturize and go! As I like to say, makeup doesn’t make a woman beautiful, the woman makes the makeup beautiful. #Idefinemybeauty #SheermineralsbyLG
