Detox Your Home with Essential Oil Cleaning Recipes

One of the easiest ways to eliminate toxins and synthetic chemicals from your home plus save money is by making your own cleaning solutions. Recipes are simple and use ingredients that are easy to find and affordable. You can find these base ingredients at most grocery stores or large online retailers:

  • Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) for grease, odors and dirt
  • Distilled vinegar for disinfecting (never mix vinegar with baking soda or hydrogen peroxide; avoid using on natural stone and wood surfaced)
  • Borax (sodium borate) solvent for grease, stains and grime
  • Washing soda (sodium carbonate) solvent for grease, mineral stains and dirt

    vinegar-bakingsoda.jpg

  • Hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting

A variety of essential oils can be used for cleaning, but these six are often used for because of their purported antibacterial and germicidal properties:

  • Tea Tree
  • Lemon
  • Sweet Orange
  • Peppermint
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender

Keep soft, washable cloths on hand for wiping surfaces; many people recommend microfiber clothes, which you can usually purchase in bulk online.

4 Reasons Meditation is the Missing Piece to Overall Wellness

Meditation has been part of our spiritual journey for centuries, but it wasn’t until the 1960s meditation gained mainstream notoriety in the west as a means of self-improvement. In modern times, meditation has become a part of a well-rounded wellness routine along with healthy diet and regular exercise. Meditation is a simple concept: sit still, breathe deeply and focus on a single point or intention for a short amount of time. As easy as it sounds, it can be difficult to schedule time alone to practice or keep your mind from wandering to your mental to-do list. After reading how meditation can positively effect your mind and body, I promise you’ll want to clear your calendar for a mere ten minutes each day to receive all the mental and physical benefits meditation has to offer.

Anti-aging

Stress causes hormone imbalance, which in turn can manifest itself in skin problems like acne, dry skin and rash. Depending on severity, skin issues can negatively affect our self-esteem and perception of ourselves. Relaxation and meditation are well-documented remedies for reducing the body’s stress response.  Mediation can also reduce inflammatory promoting genes, which can decrease the skin’s signs of aging like wrinkles and dark spots. Studies have also shown meditation to reduce blood pressure and increase blood flow; increased blood flow boosts the amount of oxygen and nutrients carried to cells, overtime.

Pain Relief

Incorporating mindful meditation into your daily routine could have long-term positive effects for pain management. Chronic pain sufferers often rely on opioid treatments for pain management just to be able to complete basic daily tasks. There is a large list of long-term side effects of opiate use including addiction and liver or brain damage. A promising study published in the Journal of Neuroscience showed participants in the meditation group’s pain ratings decreased by up to 24% compared to the non-meditating participants.

Ingredient Spotlight: Castor Oil

A highly versatile vegetable oil, castor oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds of the castor bean plant (ricinus communis), a native to Africa and India. Castor oil has been used for centuries and is an age-old remedy for medical and beauty maladies. Modern practitioners continue to use castor oil for its therapeutic benefits and as a laxative. It’s one of the first vegetable oils used in industrial applications because of its viscosity and lubricating ability, and is commonly used as a preservative on dry grains to help repel bugs.

Castor oil is extremely diverse and unique in its composition; it is able to withstand high temperatures without breaking down and maintains fluidity at both extremely high and low temperatures. Comprised of 90% ricinoleic acid plus oleic and linoleic fatty acids castor oil provides a myriad of topical benefits and is most known for:

  • Penetrating deep into skin, providing instant hydration and softening
  • Slowing the signs of aging by helping to stimulate collagen and elastin production
  • Fighting free radical damage
  • Acting as a carrier to transport other ingredients to the inner layers of the skin

Castor oil has long been used topically for anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal purposes. Although there are very few studies done in this area, antidotal evidence suggestions castor oil could help slow microbial growth and is often used in wound treatment.

The thick consistency and silky feel of castor oil makes it one of the top natural alternatives to petroleum jelly, making it an excellent option for lip products. Try the Organic Crème Lipstick, Organic Lip Gloss or handcrafted Lip Balm to protect and moisturize delicate skin. Castor oil is commonly used in the manufacturing of soaps because helps create a rich lather; try it in the new Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Soap. Believed to promote healthy circulation, castor oil can be found in products that can help relieve stress and tension such as the Cucumber Foot Soak.

4 Nontraditional Ways to Say 'I Love You’

No longer reserved for sweethearts on Valentine’s Day, celebrating love has become a month-long affair. Grandiose declarations and over-the-top proposals splash across your social media feed and local news. Flowers and chocolates dominate storefronts and email blasts. We leave love notes to our spouses, send fanciful cards to our families and hide sweet treats for our children, all beautiful gestures. Let me introduce four unconventional ways to express your love this month and beyond.

Community Service

Is there a cause close to your love’s heart? Show what’s important to them is also important to you. Arrange a few hours of volunteer time with their favorite charity, collect items for donation to their local church or help with a community project. You and your beloved will not only strengthen your bond with each other but foster relationships in your community.

Family Date Night

Games, crafts, movies and adventures…gather the kids and plan an evening of fun! Save chores and homework for another time, check the ‘business talk’ (bills, school, etc.) at the door and designate this a work-free zone. Kids of all ages will want to help plan the family’s activities, and an evening without your typical everyday responsibilities can bring everyone closer together.

5 Anti-Aging Ingredients You Should be Using

Nature offers a bounty of botanicals to nourish, heal and thrive. We’re constantly reminded the importance of fueling our bodies with proteins, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids to maintain health, and what we feed our bodies effects the appearance of our skin. Aging is an integral part of life, but feeding the skin directly plays a key role in reducing the visible signs of aging in the skin.

Free radicals are produced through both natural processes and environmental stimulus and cause cells to breakdown over time, leading to signs of aging such as wrinkles and sagging skin. Antioxidants are anti-aging heroes sent to destroy free radicals and maintain skin’s elasticity, boost natural skin regeneration and reduce the signs of aging.

Here is a list of anti-aging superstars you should be using daily:

Argan Oil

Packed with vitamin E, essential fatty acids and antioxidants, argan oil works to improve texture by strengthening the bonding structures in skin, and improves appearance by fading dark spots. Argan oil seals in moisture, balances oil production and won’t clog pores.

Benefits of the Top 3 Natural Exfoliants

Revive dull skin from head to toe by adding exfoliation to your weekly skin care routine. Exfoliating removes dead cells from the surface of the skin, smoothes rough patches and can help cellular turnover for youthful looking skin. Click here to learn about different types of exfoliation and exfoliation products in Lauren Wilkerson’s Benefits of Exfoliation blog. A variety of exfoliation materials have been used throughout history, and many of these continue to be used today such as pumice stone, sand, nutshells, and oatmeal. Three of the most common natural exfoliates are sea salt, sugar and jojoba beads, each of which provides their own unique benefits.

Sea Salt

Packed with minerals like calcium, potassium, iron and zinc, sea salt contributes to improving skin texture. When used in conjunction with a massage, sea salt is believed to increase circulation to the skin. Its high magnesium content is also believed to help reduce signs of inflammation. Sea salt has sharper edges than sugar and jojoba beads and is perfect for smoothing rough areas like elbows, knees and heels.

Benefits of Botanical and Anti Aging Complexes

Maintaining dewy, youthful skin is considered the number one skincare concern for most women. Vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and other nutrients are needed to maintain skin’s suppleness and luminosity, and Lemongrass Spa offers two anti-aging botanical blends to meet these needs.

Most people require a daily face crème to help balance and maintain hydration, regardless of skin type. While using a crème formulated for the body won’t harm your face, you’re missing out on the anti-aging benefits of a concentrated formula made with specific skincare concerns in mind. We offer face crèmes formulated for normal, dry and oily/blemished skin, and each recipe is enhanced with a botanical blend to target fine lines, uneven skin tone, rough texture and other signs of aging. If you’ve been struggling with finding a skincare routine, Lemongrass Spa’s resident licensed esthetician, Lauren Wilkerson, can help you determine your skin type (click to read more).

Botanical Complex found in the Face Crème with Botanicals, Gentle Face Crème, Tea Tree Face Crème and Original Cucumber Eye Crème with Witch Hazel includes:

  • Calendula Flower Extract: Used for centuries in wound care due to purported anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties; believed to assist in skin's consumption of proteins and collagen production.
  • Chamomile Flower Extract: Soothes and neutralizes inflamed skin and used in the treatment of skin conditions such as eczema dermatitis.
  • Rose Extract: Cleansing and astringent properties help calm dry and sensitive skin.
  • White Willow Bark Extract: The primary active compound in white willow bark is salicin. In the body, salicin can be converted into salicylic acid, which has powerful effects as an anti-inflammatory and pain-reliever.
  • Red Clover Extract: High concentration of vitamin C and minerals such as niacin, phosphorous and magnesium help reduce redness and itching from minor skin irritations.
  • Elderflower Extract: Packed with powerful antioxidants to fight free radical damage; used for anti-aging, smoothing skin tone, reducing redness and dry skin.
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride: Mix of fatty acids derived from coconut oil and vegetable glycerin used to prevent and restore moisture loss.
  • Bulgarian Lavender: Lavender has a long history of use in skin care including treating burns and rashes due to a variety of restorative properties such as anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antibacterial.
  • Rose Geranium: Helps balance oil production, improve circulation to skin, works as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory and is often used in the treatment of acne, bruises, burns, cuts, dermatitis and eczema.
  • Carrot Seed Oil: Stimulates circulation and toxin removal, which helps improve elasticity, plus has antiviral and antiseptic properties to help fight blemishes.

Outside of a balanced diet, serums are the perfect delivery system for providing the nutrients your skin needs. Serums apply a concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to the skin. Light and fast absorbing, these elixirs penetrate the inner layers of the dermis for a lasting effect and can be used with all skin types. Lemongrass Spa enhances its Green Tea Antioxidant and Organic Anti Aging Serums with an essential oil blend and anti aging complex to boost the rejuvenating effects. There are visible benefits of daily use of serum including softer, suppler skin, smoother appearance and natural vibrancy. Customers who have used the serums have noticed an improvement of overall elasticity of skin and less dryness, even in cold weather when used regularly. The Green Tea Antioxidant is a favorite among those with oily prone skin types and Organic Anti Aging (Oil) Serum is the preference for normal to dry skin types.

Essential Oil Lover’s Guide to Diffusing

Many archeological discoveries have shown evidence of plant extracts being used for religious and medicinal purposes, and ancient texts reference the use of plant extracts for physical and psychological wellbeing. Early distillation of plant extracts, similar to modern-day essential oils, is credited to Persians around the 10th century, but much of what we know about the beginning of aromatherapy has been learned from ancient Egyptian culture where evidence of burned plant resins, balms and oils have been found in tombs, hieroglyphics and other ruins.

Aromatherapy has evolved since ancient times, and we have only begun discovering the science behind how plant essences benefit our physical and psychological health. Enhancing mood is one of aromatherapy’s most understood benefits. Have you ever smelled your favorite flower or baked goods and couldn’t help but smile? Create a romantic, uplifting, relaxing or other desirable ambiance by diffusing essential oils in your home or car. People diffuse oils purely for the love of a scent, aromatherapy benefits or both. Whatever your reason, it is recommended you use an electric nebulizer or diffuser (steam or fan) to maintain the molecular integrity of the compound because essential oils can breakdown if exposed to heat. On August 15, Lemongrass Spa Products is releasing three new diffuser choices: Welcome Home Ultrasonic Diffuser (steam), Lattice Diffuser (fan) and Wall Diffuser (fan) to go along with our popular Car Diffuser (fan).

Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the diffuser to enjoy the aroma throughout your home or car. Along with your favorite individual essential oils and blends, here are ten different combinations to try:Wall_Diffuser_1.jpg

Ingredient Spotlight: Moringa Oil

Nicknamed the “Miracle Tree” and “Tree of Life” due to it’s many health benefits, the moringa tree produces one of the West’s favorite, yet relatively unknown, natural skin care ingredients. Moringa was first referenced around 2000 BC as a medicinal herb and is still revered in Ayurvedic medicine as a prevention and cure from a myriad of diseases; it was also used for skin care and perfumery in ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian cultures.

Indigenous to the Himalayas, the moringa tree is cultivated in tropical and subtropical climates such as Asia and Africa. The tree is hardy and fast growing; most parts of the tree are edible, making moringa an important food crop to help combat hunger and nutritional deficiencies in impoverished countries. Studies on the nutritional and medicinal properties of the moringa plant so far have only reinforced why it is becoming such a renowned ingredient.

Considered one of the best ingredients for anti-aging, moringa oil, extracted from the tree’s seeds, is light, quickly absorbed and penetrates deep into the skin. This nutrient and antioxidant rich oil is known for slowing the signs of aging, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and improving the appearance of sagging skin; antidotal evidence also points to moringa oil reducing the appearance of dark spots. Rich in vitamins and unsaturated fatty acids moringa oil is excellent for conditioning dry, chapped skin as well as restoring and maintaining moisture balance. Its antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties help heal minor skin irritations and blemishes. It is also believed to deliver vitamins and minerals to hair follicles, which strengthens hair and combats dryness.

Moringa oil is a featured ingredient in our new Nursing Balm and Beard Oil.

Fun Fact Once oil is extracted from the moringa tree’s seeds, the remaining seed cake can be used to remove sediment and bacteria from dirty water, which is useful in areas industrial water treatment is not readily available.

Ingredient Spotlight: Evening Primrose Oil

A bright yellow North American wildflower, evening primrose’s name comes from the plant’s blooming in the evenings. This common wildflower was a dietary and medicinal staple in Native American cultures. The stems and roots were cooked and eaten while parts of the plant were used in medicinal treatments from wound compresses to tinctures and teas for a variety of ailments including digestive and menstrual issues. Renowned for it’s skin-rejuvenating quality, evening primrose oil has become a natural skin care star.

Evening primrose oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the Evening Primrose plant. The oil is comprised of omega-6 essential fatty acids Linolenic and Gamma Linolenic and omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids Oleic, Palmitic and Stearic. Omega-6 fatty acids are important structural components of cell membranes but are not produced by the body, and evening primrose oil contains one of the highest concentrations of Linolenic Acid in the family of natural oils with concentrations typically between 55-72%. Fatty acids are integral to maintain the structural integrity of the skin, which reduces the signs of aging, and topical application has been found to be as effective for the skin healthy as oral supplements.

Antioxidants vitamin E and vitamin C are also packed into this golden oil; they help protect skin against environmental stressors and oxidation, which causes fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging. Evening primrose oil’s anti-inflammatory properties have made it an essential ingredient in creams and lotions to help soothe dryness, itchiness and redness associated with skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. Evening primrose oil is also considered to help those suffering from hormonal acne. The oil absorbs into the skin quickly, reduces transepidermal water loss and is considered hypoallergenic because skin irritation is rare.

Lemongrass Spa harnesses the benefits of evening primrose oil in a variety of products. For anti-aging benefits try Gentle Face Crème, Face Crème with Botanicals, Tea Tree Face Crème or Organic Anti Aging Serum. For all your moisturizing needs choose from Whipped Body Butter, Hand & Body LotionHand & Body Lotion and Ultra Hydrating Body Crème.

4 Uses for Mango Butter

Mango butter is traditionally used in tropical regions to moisturize and heal skin but has found its way into Western skin care treatments. This fast absorbing, non-greasy fat is lightly scented, off-white in color and a solid at room temperature. Mango butter is extracted from the pulp of the mango seed, which is rich in oleic and stearic acids and omega-9. It is similar to cocoa butter with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and antiseptic properties.

Mango butter is often used in wound care due to its ability to regenerate skin. In a study performed to test the effectiveness of mango butter on wound healing, specifically cracked skin, results demonstrated mango butter to completely repair skin and predominantly be “antiseptic, healing, soothing and cooling in most of the clinical subjects” as well as “actively replenish[ing] moisture, leaving the skin looking silky smooth and hydrated.”

Dry Skin

Mango butter increases hydration and is presumed to prevent drying of skin by reducing water loss from the epidermis. It’s used to treat dryness caused by eczema and psoriasis plus itchiness from rashes and bug bites.

Using Essential Oils for Your Home Spa

Used across the globe for centuries, plant essences played a substantial role in medicinal preparations and religious ceremonies. These essences evolved to what we now know as essential oils. While still used for medical and religious purposes, essential oils developed a contemporary following for relaxation, massage and skincare and as a mood booster.
