4 Reasons Meditation is the Missing Piece to Overall Wellness

Meditation has been part of our spiritual journey for centuries, but it wasn’t until the 1960s meditation gained mainstream notoriety in the west as a means of self-improvement. In modern times, meditation has become a part of a well-rounded wellness routine along with healthy diet and regular exercise. Meditation is a simple concept: sit still, breathe deeply and focus on a single point or intention for a short amount of time. As easy as it sounds, it can be difficult to schedule time alone to practice or keep your mind from wandering to your mental to-do list. After reading how meditation can positively effect your mind and body, I promise you’ll want to clear your calendar for a mere ten minutes each day to receive all the mental and physical benefits meditation has to offer.

Anti-aging

Stress causes hormone imbalance, which in turn can manifest itself in skin problems like acne, dry skin and rash. Depending on severity, skin issues can negatively affect our self-esteem and perception of ourselves. Relaxation and meditation are well-documented remedies for reducing the body’s stress response.  Mediation can also reduce inflammatory promoting genes, which can decrease the skin’s signs of aging like wrinkles and dark spots. Studies have also shown meditation to reduce blood pressure and increase blood flow; increased blood flow boosts the amount of oxygen and nutrients carried to cells, overtime.

Pain Relief

Incorporating mindful meditation into your daily routine could have long-term positive effects for pain management. Chronic pain sufferers often rely on opioid treatments for pain management just to be able to complete basic daily tasks. There is a large list of long-term side effects of opiate use including addiction and liver or brain damage. A promising study published in the Journal of Neuroscience showed participants in the meditation group’s pain ratings decreased by up to 24% compared to the non-meditating participants.

Essential Oil Lover’s Guide to Diffusing

Many archeological discoveries have shown evidence of plant extracts being used for religious and medicinal purposes, and ancient texts reference the use of plant extracts for physical and psychological wellbeing. Early distillation of plant extracts, similar to modern-day essential oils, is credited to Persians around the 10th century, but much of what we know about the beginning of aromatherapy has been learned from ancient Egyptian culture where evidence of burned plant resins, balms and oils have been found in tombs, hieroglyphics and other ruins.

Aromatherapy has evolved since ancient times, and we have only begun discovering the science behind how plant essences benefit our physical and psychological health. Enhancing mood is one of aromatherapy’s most understood benefits. Have you ever smelled your favorite flower or baked goods and couldn’t help but smile? Create a romantic, uplifting, relaxing or other desirable ambiance by diffusing essential oils in your home or car. People diffuse oils purely for the love of a scent, aromatherapy benefits or both. Whatever your reason, it is recommended you use an electric nebulizer or diffuser (steam or fan) to maintain the molecular integrity of the compound because essential oils can breakdown if exposed to heat. On August 15, Lemongrass Spa Products is releasing three new diffuser choices: Welcome Home Ultrasonic Diffuser (steam), Lattice Diffuser (fan) and Wall Diffuser (fan) to go along with our popular Car Diffuser (fan).

Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the diffuser to enjoy the aroma throughout your home or car. Along with your favorite individual essential oils and blends, here are ten different combinations to try:Wall_Diffuser_1.jpg

Using Essential Oils for Your Home Spa

Used across the globe for centuries, plant essences played a substantial role in medicinal preparations and religious ceremonies. These essences evolved to what we now know as essential oils. While still used for medical and religious purposes, essential oils developed a contemporary following for relaxation, massage and skincare and as a mood booster. Lemongrass Spa Products mission is not only to provide fresh, clean & natural products for the entire family but also to provide an indulgent spa experience from the comfort of your own home. Here are some tips and recipes for enhancing your home spa experience using essential oils.

Diffusing

Create a romantic, uplifting, relaxing or other desirable ambiance by diffusing essential oils in your home or car. People diffuse oils purely for the love of a scent, aromatherapy benefits or both. Whatever your reason, it is recommended you use an electric nebulizer or diffuser (steam or fan) to maintain the molecular integrity of the compound because essential oils can breakdown if exposed to heat. Lemongrass Spa Products now offers three diffuser choices: Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser (steam), Aroma to Go Portable Diffuser (fan) and a new Car Diffuser (fan). Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the diffuser to enjoy the aroma throughout your home or car. As an added bonus, a study published in t

The Art of Aromatherapy Part 4: Expanding Essential Oil Collection

Plant essences have been used for thousands of years to harmonize mind, body and spirit. It is believed the aroma produced by a plant’s essential oil stimulates the sections of the brain responsible for emotions and memory to positively effects mood plus interacts with the body’s hormones to influence specific functions. As a compliment to our home spa experience, Lemongrass Spa unveiled an organic essential oil collection last year, and to further our commitment to providing both purposeful and indulgent products for the entire family, we’re introducing four divine new essential oils to the lineup.

Certified Organic Essential Oils

  • Frankincense Oil (boswellia rivae). Steam distilled. Aroma: clean, woody and spicy aroma.
    • Soothe mind, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, supports immune and respiratory systems

The Art of Aromatherapy Part 2: Benefits of Essential Oils

Deeply connected to our emotions, scents have the ability to transport us to different times in our personal history and affect our mood. Scientist believe this connection is partly due to the part of the brain responsible for processing scents, located next to the hippocampus, which is crucially responsible for handling and storing memories. Aromatherapy plays off of this relationship to enhance or change a mood.

Inhalation vs. Application

Aromatherapy benefits of essential oils are achieved with two therapies: inhalation and application. Inhalation therapy is used for emotional and spiritual balance. For inhalation therapy, add a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser or combine with water in a spray bottle to mist throughout a room. Application therapy is for purification of the body. Add essential oil to organic fractioned coconut oil or try in your favorite unscented Lemongrass Spa product. Massage into skin, inhale and feel muscle tension release while your mind is eased. See Precautions below for application therapy dilution recommendations.

Organic Essential Oils

  • Lavender Oil (lavandula angustifolia). Steam distilled. Aroma: floral, fruity, herbal
    • Balancing, soothing, calming, relaxing and healing.
  • Lemon Oil (citrus limon). Cold pressed lemon peel. Aroma: clean, citrus, sugary
    • Uplifting and refreshing
  • Peppermint Oil (menthe piperita). Steam distilled. Aroma: minty, warm, herbal, with notes of greenery.
    • Refreshing and cooling
  • Tea Tree Oil (melaleuca alternifolia). Steam distilled. Aroma: warm, herbal, with notes of greenery
    • Uplifting, cleansing and purifying

The Art of Aromatherapy Part 1: Launch of the Essential Oil Collection

The whir of a sewing machine is the only sound in the room. I’m seated on the floor, legs crossed, among shiny, silky scraps of fabric. I smile as I inhale the earthy smell of mothballs, watching my grandmother create her latest masterpiece. I look around and realize I’m standing in the middle of a florescent-lit department store, not seated on the floor of my grandmother’s basement sewing room, smelling the designer “drawer fresheners” (or, in other words, mothballs). That is the power of smell. Deeply connected to our emotions, scents have the ability to transport us to different times in our personal history and affect our mood. Ancient cultures incorporated the burning of resins and incents into religious and medical practices, and archeological finds show evidence different scents were used for their perceived purifying and healing powers. Over time these practices gave way to aromatherapy, harnessing the benefits of flowers and herbs for physical and psychological benefits.

Since the beginning, Lemongrass Spa Products has used essential oils to complement its body care collection. Wash away the day’s stress with a sprinkling of Lavender Bath Crystals to a warm bath or awaken your senses in the middle of the day while replenishing skin’s moisture with Spearmint Eucalyptus Hand & Body Lotion. A natural progression for the company’s mission to provide fresh, clean skin and body care products was to enhance the spa experience through aromatherapy with fresh, clean essential oils. Founder & CEO, Heidi Leist worked closely with the essential oil supplier to ensure the oils met her high standard of excellence.

The Five Qualities of Lemongrass Spa’s Essential Oil Collection

  1. 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oils
    1. Oils are tested with a Gas Chromatographic Spectrometer which maps the individual constitutes of the essential oil to ensure the oils contain the correct balance that qualify the oil as pure and unadulterated. Click here to read more about GC testing.
  2. USDA Certified Organic or Wildcrafted crops
    1. Wildcrafted plants are not farmed but ethically and sustainably cultivated from their natural growth areas.
    2. Click here for USDA certification standards.
  3. Crops are harvested and distilled by artisans (essential oil “artists”) who ensure the plants are harvested and distilled at the right time to guarantee the resulting oil is of the highest quality for therapeutic benefits.
    1. An example of why harvesting and distilling times are important: A certified organic rosemary essential where the plant was picked at the end of the season would be high in camphor, making it a low grade essential oil.
  4. Ecological and sustainable business practices from farms and distilleries, meaning no damage to the earth or surrounding community is done during the farming or distilling process
  5. As with all of Lemongrass Spa’s raw ingredients and finished products, essential oils are never tested on animals.

We encourage our customers to consider the importance of the USDA Certified Organic or Wildcrafted Essential Oils versus using those that may be diluted or grown in areas with a high prevalence of pesticide use. There is such a wide array of quality of essential oils – from very high quality to very poor quality - available in the marketplace. It’s important you know what you are diffusing, putting on your skin or inhaling.

Please join me next week for The Art of Aromatherapy Part 2: Benefits of Essential Oils and learn about the aromatherapy benefits of our essential oil collection as well as a few blending ideas.

Peppermint evokes thoughts of sweet menthol aroma like candy canes at Christmas time. This fresh cool scent, distilled from the leaves of the plant species Mentha piperita, is one of the most widely used essential oils in aromatherapy and is described as energizing and refreshing. Although there is promising research with peppermint essential oil aromatherapy and relief from symptoms of indigestion, nausea and vomiting, evidence of relief from other ailments is primarily antidotal at this time.

Here are the top 5 therapeutic aromatherapy benefits of peppermint essential oil*:

Incorporate peppermint spa products into your skincare routine for potential therapeutic benefits or to  relish in the energizing bouquet. Whatever your reason for choosing peppermint infused products, Lemongrass Spa Products provides a variety to meet your needs, including the limited edition Candy Cane Collection, available through January 15, 2015.
