This Just In: Sheer Minerals Goes Full On Glam!!

The Lemongrass Spa Products fall launch included a makeover for Sheer Minerals Makeup. We’ve gone full on glam!

Introducing our gorgeous, low profile, logo embossed, sleek and chic mineral makeup jars!

Top of the line makeup deserves top of the line packaging. The new rotating sifters make it easier to dip your brush, pour, shake and most importantly, seal our amazing mineral makeup to prevent waste and spillage. You can still tap a bit into your cap for application or pour from the larger opening into your coordinating Mineral Mate Mixing and Application Tray without having to pry the sifter off. The wider, low profile jars keep the minerals from getting packed in too tightly which made them difficult and messy to dispense. The amount of product (trial and full) is still the same, but you will find it far easier to get the precise amount for application. Fresh, CLEAN, Natural and beautiful!!

There is seriously nothing more glam than a sultry smoky eye. Our new Graphite Eye Shadow makes the classic smoky eye look even more achievable. This stunning matte color has the ability to enhance every eye color. Smokey grey with hints of taupe, this shadow is equally neutral and dramatic.

For a classic smoky eye using Graphite:

Focus on the Positive! How-to Contour and Highlight

We have all seen the highlight contour tutorials. If you are intrigued and curious but hesitant and a little confused about the newest Sheer Minerals contouring and highlighting products and tools, we are here to help. It is really not as intimidating as some of the paint by numbers-looking videos and pictures make it appear.SheerMinerals_HowToContour_FB_no_text.jpg

The general rule of thumb with contouring and highlighting is to create or emphasize light and shadow. As I often reference in my blogs, it is face art. Light will bring things forth and dark will minimize or recess them. The eye will always go to the light. Think of highlighting as the “positive” and remember the eye will always “focus on the positive”.

If you have a round face and want to create cheekbones apply Contour Powder to the hollows of your cheeks (under your cheekbone) and Strobe Stick to the actual cheekbone and “apples” of your cheeks, thus creating the illusion that the hollows recede and the cheekbones pop out. If you have a round face and want it to appear more oval, imagine placing a paper oval cut out in front of your face. Any areas that would extend beyond the cut out, you would want to recede with shading. Focus the Strobe Stick on places light naturally shines like the center of your forehead, nose and chin. The result is a slimmer longer face. If your face is long and slim, focus your contour on the chin and forehead, which will in essence “shorten” the face.

For me, I would like my nose to appear longer and narrower, so I apply Contour Powder on either side of my nose and then put the focus (light) in a line down the bridge of my nose to the tip. This creates the illusion that the broader portions of my nose recede and the bridge and tip of my nose are more prominent.

The best contouring and strobing tip is: experiment. Apply your Contour Powder with the Foundation Concealer Brush, and then, use the Blending Sponge to apply and blend the Strobe Stick.

Age Defying Beauty

….And the beauty of a woman with passing years only grows – Audrey Hepburn

Pre-Makeup Prep

Tweeze away any strays and clean up your eyebrow shape. A defined brow and clean brow bone opens and lifts the eye.

Exfoliate Dry dead skin can hang on to makeup, causing skin to appear dull and patchy.

Cleanse Gently cleanse your face with your choice of cleansing gel or bar soap and pat dry with a soft towel. Apply your facial mist as well.

A Case for Makeup

Many celebrities and “well-knowns” are ditching the makeup for an all-natural, no makeup look and being quite public about it. Defying what they call a skewed “public standard of beauty”. There is even a hashtag created for this movement: #nomakeup

I have encountered women who say, “I don’t wear makeup, I’m beautiful just the way I am!“ and to that I say, “Yes, you are!” But for me, and so many others I know, we love our makeup! Its fun, its transformative and in a way, a very personal art form! I like the concept of contours and highlights; putting light-catching shimmer here and there, playing with eye shadow that makes the color of my eyes look more intense and endlessly practicing, and to date, failing with winged eyeliner. Rather than being a conformist act of masking who I really am, or an insecurity with my naked face, I regard it as a personal expression, like a tattoo, only washable. I am totally intrigued by women who can chisel a cheekbone out of nothing but the color brown. That’s an ART! But many in the #nomakeup movement would translate this as not loving what you were given. I respectfully beg to differ. I confess I do appreciate hiding behind a little concealer when I have a break out (usually before family pictures or some sort of social soiree). Is this because I do not love myself? Is it because I am trying to aspire to an unattainable standard of beauty? No, it is because I am not fond of the angry, red third eye in the middle of my forehead. That is all.

Culturally and historically, men and women have done makeup or face painting for centuries for beauty, celebration, war, religion, to ward off diseases and protect from the sun. By the time Queen Cleopatra came to power in the 1st century BC, Egyptian women had at their disposal a whole array of cosmetics, all of which were made from rocks, minerals and plants in the region. Cleopatra used bright green and a deep blue eye shadow with gold-colored pyrite flecks. She darkened her eyebrows and lengthened her eyelashes. She used red ochre, a type of clay colored red by iron oxide for blush and lipstick.

The #nomakeup naturalist may claim the toxic brew of chemicals women put on their face as reasoning for their stance. Legitimate! But with Sheer Minerals by Lemongrass Spa, you need not worry.

I hardly think the use of makeup or lack thereof is worthy of a “movement”. My idea of a movement would be to accept all translations of beauty. If your look is a swipe of lip balm and a ponytail, you go girl! If you pile on eyeliner, practice on your wings or paint on a precise 40’s era red lip, fabulous!! Most of what brings out beauty comes from the inside out. With Lemongrass Spa and Sheer Minerals, you can paint your gorgeous palette safely and naturally to your hearts content or, if you prefer, simply moisturize and go! As I like to say, makeup doesn’t make a woman beautiful, the woman makes the makeup beautiful. #Idefinemybeauty #SheermineralsbyLG

Lions and Tigers and…. Lead?…Oh My! Using Sheer Minerals Makeup For a Safe and Healthy Halloween

Ghosts and Goblins are not the only frightening things lurking around this Halloween. Many of the commercial face-painting products on the market today contain petroleum, lead, artificial dyes and fragrances, as well as skin allergens such as cobalt, chromium and nickel. Not to mention the scream-worthy ingredients in adhesives and glues, the red dye in fake blood and synthetic chemicals in spray-on hair color. Halloween can be a veritable witches brew of toxic ingredients!!

Fortunately, with Lemongrass Spa, there’s an alternative. You can achieve almost any look you want with our collection of Sheer Minerals makeup! Any of the Sheer Minerals powders can be mixed with water or Healing Elements Balm to glide on effortlessly. Our Black and Brown Natural Eyeliners can be used for outlines, cat eyes, black noses and freckles. The Organic Crème Lipstick in Siren is a perfect blood-red for a Count (or Countess) Dracula. Add a little sparkle to your favorite Fairy Princess with White Diamond Eye Shadow. The possibilities are as big as your imagination!

To demonstrate the versatility and ease of application of Sheer Minerals as Halloween makeup, Lemongrass Spa hosted a Halloween Face-Off contest with our Consultants and their families and friends. We asked them to submit photos and application instructions of their best Halloween makeovers for a chance to win $100 as well as be featured in this blog. Wow! What an amazing response we got! The submissions were incredible! There was such a huge response that we had a hard time choosing the winners! Thank you to all who took the time to showcase their creative, adorable, scary and sometimes hilarious works of art on themselves and their favorite people.

Without further ado, the winners of our Halloween Face-Off are:

Eye Candy: SWEET Color Matching Tips for Your Eyes

Many times when choosing eye shadow colors, we choose what is appealing TO our eyes, but not necessarily ON our eyes. Finding the right colors to make your peepers POP can make all of the difference in putting your best face forward. Follow these color matching tips for eye-catching results!

If Your Eyes are BLUE…

Neutral colors set off blue eyes. Sheer Minerals shades like Sea Shell, Sand Pearl, Dazzle, Ballerina Pink, Matte Mocha and even our Coral Blush are beautiful with your baby blues for a daytime look. Blue-eyed beauties look best when wearing earthy tones, but if you want a brighter look, you can also wear rose-colored or pink shadows like Sassy Pink or our Sweet Cheeks Blush. Deeply pigmented colors like Suede and Amaretto are more dramatic and intense, offsetting lighter colors for a stunning evening eye. Blue is a cool color and warm colors are the best contrast with your eyes. In this case, opposites attract!!

If Your Eyes are GREY…

Like shades and tones actually intensify the rare grey eye. Smokey shades, like Silver Sky, Frosted Taupe and Blue Quartz, for a daytime look compliment and play up grey eyes. A smokey eye technique done in grey and blue shades such as Silver Sky and Smokey Eye are especially alluring and sultry for an evening look. If subtle colors are more your style, stay cool. Ballerina Pink or cool Serenity Blue will be the ICE-ing on the cake for grey-eyed babes.

You Think You're so Cool! A Guide to Foundation Color Matching

Warm, Cool or Neutral.  Which are you?  Surprisingly most people don’t know! Selecting the correct color of makeup and clothing can help you put your best and most vibrant face forward.

Choosing the wrong undertone for foundation can make your face look muddy or ashy rather than healthy and glowing. As an example, let’s say you have pink (cool) undertones and you mistakenly choose a foundation with yellow (warm) undertones; being opposites on the color wheel, you aren’t going to be bringing out and enhancing the natural glow of your skin, but rather masking it. Foundations are designed to blend with and smooth the color and appearance of your own skin.  If you look in the mirror and something doesn’t look quite right and you don’t have the healthy, vibrant look after applying your foundation, you may have chosen the wrong undertone.

To determine if you are warm cool or neutral, we need to first differentiate between “tone” and “undertone”.  The tone of your skin can change depending on the time of year it is. You may be a light in the winter and a tan in the summer.  The undertone, however, is the color under the surface of the skin.  Think of it as backlighting behind the skin.  I may be a medium, but am I a Sand Medium (cool) or a Golden Medium (warm)? This all depends on the undertone. Surprisingly, the color of your eyes and hair are not necessarily determining factors in your undertone.

The 4 undertones are:

Cool:  pink, red or blue undertones

Sheer Minerals Spotlight: Serenity Eye Shadow

Serenity…Don’t you just love the sound of it. It emotes visions of light blue clear skies, softly lapping ocean waves, a light blue cotton sundress blowing in a light breeze and all things gentle, calm, soft and soothing. It is befitting our newest shade of Sheer Minerals eye shadow. It is a lovely color on blondes, brunettes and redheads and complimentary to all skin tones as well as all ages.

Some may look at it and think of the 70’s and polyester. While it is a pretty “groovy” color, I encourage those afraid of the hippie/disco/grandma stigma, to try it. It is crisp, clean and everything summer in one shade. Plus, if you felt like feathering your hair and throwing on your white polyester bell bottoms…there’s nothing wrong with a little throwback!

One of the two Pantone Color of the Year, Serenity is a must-have for your summer eye shadow collection.

A few techniques for different looks with Serenity:

Line with it: If you are a little intimidated by sweeping the color dramatically across your lids, pair Serenity Blue with a complimentary color, such as Ballerina Pink Eye Shadow, and simply use Serenity Blue as a liner. Wet your brush for more intense color and precision.

Keep Mature Skin Young, Bright and Healthy with Sheer Minerals

Hello Natural Beauties,

Recently I have seen many questions regarding more mature skin and its appearance with powdered mineral makeup. To this topic, I can speak with a bit of experience. A few precious months away from the big Five-Oh, I can tell you that I, like some of you, cannot wear the powdered minerals by themselves. Living in Colorado, my skin tends to be on the dry side and the powder alone can make my skin appear a little less youthful than I would like. I would LOVE to have the wrinkle and fine line free skin of my youth, but alas, those days are in my rearview mirror. However, hydrating and smoothing out the appearance of my skin with the Lemongrass Spa’s line of skin care and Sheer Minerals cosmetics is instrumental in keeping my skin healthy, moisturized and youthful.

Here are ten keys to keeping more mature skin looking young, bright and healthy:

  1. Dehydration is a wrinkles best friend. Drink plenty of water, herbal tea and juice.
  2. Pore Cleansing. When pores become congested with makeup, dead skin cells and dirt, they can appear larger and disrupt the smooth appearance of the skin. Using Microdermabrasion Crème and our clay-based facemasks once a week, as well as a daily toner, can cleanse and tighten the pores resulting in a smoother more youthful surface.
  3. Nightly Serum regime. I cannot express enough the difference I have seen in my skin since I began using the Organic Anti Aging Oil Serum. It has been astounding to see the change from dull and dry to bright and supple.
  4. Eye makeup remover. Pulling and stretching the skin around our eyes to remove makeup can damage the very delicate skin. Be gentle around this area that is so prone to damage. Use our emollient rich Organic Eye Makeup Remover for a dual-purpose eye makeup remover and vitamin rich healing moisturizer.
  5. Primer OR BB Crème. I wouldn't recommend using both since the BB crème acts as a primer serum and foundation in one and can create a little too much "slip" for your blush and eye color to stay in place. The last thing you need is to look like you are melting.
  6. If the BB Crème is not enough coverage for you, you can use both the powder and the BB Crème for a flawless finish. You can also combine your mineral foundation and your primer for the same effect. I like to tap a little bit of the powdered foundation into my Minerals Mate Mixing and Application Tray and then pump a small amount of BB Crème into a separate spot on the tray. Using my Kabuki Brush, I dab the brush into the BB Crème and then dip it into the powdered foundation and blend in a circular motion on my face. They blend beautifully and create a nice, light matte coverage without the tendency to "crack" in the wrinkles and fine lines.
  7. Onward and upward. Whatever you are putting on your face after the foundation, blend UP. Whether its eye shadow, blush or bronzer, defy the effects of gravity by blending color upward.
  8. Highlight to create a dewy look. Whatever blush or bronzer you have applied, mix it with a couple shakes of White Diamond Eye Shadow and dust on the prominent areas of your face (forehead, nose, cheekbones and chin) for a youthful sheen.
  9. Ending on the same note I began, hydration: Use your Mineral Setting Spray frequently throughout the day. Bring your makeup and skin back to life with a spritz of setting spray multiple times daily. It brightens the look of your makeup as well as moisturizes and plumps the skin. Neroli is also a fantastic anti-aging ingredient for the skin.
  10. Smile!! Nothing looks more youthful than a bright, welcoming smile.

“The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years.” Audrey Hepburn
