5 Anti-Aging Ingredients You Should be Using

Nature offers a bounty of botanicals to nourish, heal and thrive. We’re constantly reminded the importance of fueling our bodies with proteins, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids to maintain health, and what we feed our bodies effects the appearance of our skin. Aging is an integral part of life, but feeding the skin directly plays a key role in reducing the visible signs of aging in the skin.

Free radicals are produced through both natural processes and environmental stimulus and cause cells to breakdown over time, leading to signs of aging such as wrinkles and sagging skin. Antioxidants are anti-aging heroes sent to destroy free radicals and maintain skin’s elasticity, boost natural skin regeneration and reduce the signs of aging.

Here is a list of anti-aging superstars you should be using daily:

Argan Oil

Packed with vitamin E, essential fatty acids and antioxidants, argan oil works to improve texture by strengthening the bonding structures in skin, and improves appearance by fading dark spots. Argan oil seals in moisture, balances oil production and won’t clog pores.

Why Using Oil on Oily Skin Might Surprise You

Will using oil on my oily skin make it worse? Will it make my skin look greasy? Will it cause acne? Can I cleanse my skin with just oil? These are all concerns people with oily skin have when considering incorporating naturals oils into their skincare regimen and you’ll find them addressed below.Everyone with every skin type can benefit from using natural oil on their skin because it provides the most rapid results for hydrating and moisturizing.  Oils provide your skin with vitamins and omega’s, both of which help guard against aging and aid in healing a variety of skin issues.

  1. Will using oil on oily skin make it worse? No. People with an oily skin type have larger pores, which produces more oil (click here to read my blog on how to determine your skin type). The problem with people who have oily skin is their want to strip or remove all of the oil off their skin. They either contribute excess oil production to causing acne (which it does not), or they don’t want to look “shiny”. When they do this they cause their skin to overcompensate and produce even more oil. When you put oil on oily skin it tricks your skin into thinking it has enough oil on it and does not need to produce anymore. Over time your skin will stop overcompensating and balance out.
  2. Will using oil make my skin look greasy? No. When using the right oil for your skin type and the correct amount your skin should absorb most of the oil, leaving no greasy residue and just a healthy glow! The key to using oil is the ‘less is more’ approach. Unless you are using it to cleanse the skin, you should only use a tiny amount. Also, the type of oil you are using on your skin will help with how your skin will absorb it.
  3. Will using oils cause acne? It is possible. Oils do have a comedogenic (pore clogging) rating from high to low. The oils itself do not cause acne, but if you are using an oil with a high comedogenic rating and have large pores, it could clog them and cause breakouts. Before using oils, research the best oils for your skin type. This will eliminate any unwanted breakouts. When you find the correct oils they can actually help heal acne and clear the skin.
  4. Can I cleanse my skin with just oil? Yes! This is the best example of like attracting like. When you are removing makeup, dirt and excess oil, it is beneficial to use a product that will attach itself to these impurities. Oil will attach to them, and then when you remove the oil everything else will remove with it. If you are also having trouble with cleansers stripping your skin, I would suggest massaging a little bit of oil on your skin before cleansing. This will create a protective barrier and ensure your skin won’t become stripped along with deep cleaning the makeup and dirt out of the pores.

Lemongrass Spa Products offer a variety of different types of oils. The Organic Anti-Aging Oil Serum is rich in vitamins B, C and E that helps guard against free radicals and boost luminosity. The Baby Massage Oil and Coconut Crème Massage Oil are great in place of or addition to moisturizers for an extra hydration boost. The new Men’s Essentials Beard Oil is excellent for conditioning men’s facial hair and skin, while reducing itchiness or irritations associated with hair growth. Last is the Organic Eye Makeup Remover, which replenishes the skin with nutrients and reduces the appearance of fine lines. Enjoy using and incorporating these oils into your daily skincare routine!

Five Steps to Summer Ready Skin

You’ve booked your tickets to that summer getaway but before you leave town, you realize that your skin isn’t beach ready! Here are five easy steps to glowing arms, legs and even feet!

  1. Use our Body Polish before you remove unwanted hair to prepare skin for the smoothest shave. The polish will remove any dull skin and hydrate with its natural oils leaving you with a healthy summer glow. To subtly enhance your skin’s color and add a touch of sparkle and shine, follow with one of our Bronzing Butters in two seasonal scents, Coconut Cream and Mandarin Orange.
  2. During outdoor summer activities don’t forget to apply one of our Lemongrass Spa sunscreens to shield your skin from sun damaging rays. Help protect the environment with our natural sunscreen sticks. The Sunscreen Sport Stick SPF 30 is easy for traveling or touch ups through out the day. The Tinted Sunscreen Sport Stick SPF 30 or BB Crème is easy to wear with our Sheer Minerals Makeup for extra protection for everyday use. For the safest sunscreens on the market, including Lemongrass Spa’s Ocean Friendly and Sport Stick, check out the Environmental Working Group’s 2016 Guide to sunscreens.
  3. If you have experienced too much sun, place our Hand and Body Lotion, Body Icing or Ultra Hydrating Body Crème in the refrigerator before applying. This will not only moisturize sun-damaged skin, but also soothe and cool down the burn. You can even add a couple drops of our certified organic Peppermint Essential Oil to the lotion to help draw the heat out of sunburned skin. Another Lemongrass Spa product that is refreshing to place in the fridge is the Hydrating Body Spritz. Misting the refreshing spritz on the go or after a day of outdoor adventures is another great way to cool down.
  4. Beach walks, flip flips, sandals and being barefoot can take a toll on your feet during warm weather months. Our Complete Cucumber or Herbal Foot Care Kits are the perfect answers for feet in need of some attention. For deep moisturizing, places socks over your feet for a couple hours or over night after using the foot balms. While getting your feet sandal-ready, consider blessing a deserving service member stationed overseas with a foot spa by purchasing a Freedom Feet Foot Kit; click here to learn more about the Freedom Feet program.
  5. These are some other important tips that are often overlooked to keep your skin summer ready. Your underarm area can be very sensitive especially if you are shaving more often. Our new all Natural Deodorant Paste and Deodorant Spray are gentle on skin and will help keep odor away. We also have a Natural Deodorant Stick for those who like a more traditional deodorant. The last summer skin tip is to wear a bug spray. There is nothing worse then having itchy bug bites during the summer. Take Bug-a-Boo Insect Repellent with you to all your outdoor activates to keep those pests away. If you happen to get a bite, place our Healing Elements Balm on it as soon as possible to help soothe the itch and irritation.

With these five steps your skin will be ready for warm weather! We hope that you take Lemongrass Spa with you throughout all your summer activities. Have a happy, healthy and safe skin summer!

5 Skincare Myths Answered

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. Now that we are all settling back into our routines, most of us are setting out to achieve our New Year’s resolutions. Whether it is to be more fit, find more time for yourself or eat healthier one of the easiest resolutions you can achieve is better skin!

Since there are many skincare myths, sometimes it can discourage people from starting a great skincare routine. Below I am going to answer some of the most common myths to help put your mind at ease.

Myth #1 You should only use oil-free products on oily skin.

It is now known that using oil on oily skin can help bring balance to the skin. People who have oily skin tend to strip it of all its natural oils and in return the skin overcompensates and produces more oil. This can be a tough cycle to break. If you are dealing with oily skin it is acceptable to use an oil-free product during the day and use oil at night. During the day you can obtain the benefits of matte skin by using an oil-free moisturizer and at night you can focus on rebalancing your skin with oil. Grape seed and jojoba oil are great for oily skin and those emollients are in our Tea Tree Face Crème.

Myth #2 Skin should be “squeaky-clean” or “tight” after washing.

Updating Your Skin Care for Fall

Cooler temperatures, light breezes and changing foliage signify the end of summer for much of the country, and with these arrives skin’s foe: dry air. Drier air can bring red, flaky skin and breakouts; for many of us, making a few small changes to our skin care routine will help to combat these changes.

Exfoliate

Dull skin is an unwanted effect of fun summer activities. Reveal radiant skin by sloughing off dead cells with an exfoliating product.

Face: If you aren’t already exfoliating your face, add a weekly facial polish to your routine or try a deeper scrub to minimize the damage done to your

skin with the Microdermabrasion Crème*.

Transitioning to a New Skin Care Regimen

Most people are hesitant when changing their skincare routine. Whether their current one is working or not, they fear that changing their products will have a negative impact on their skin. The truth is implementing different skincare products and ingredients into your routine are beneficial. Just like a personal trainer advises their clients to rotate their workouts so your muscles don’t become complacent, estheticians advise their clients to change their skincare routine. This allows the skin to receive different benefits from new products. Your skin is consistently changing and your skincare should be adjusting to reflect your skins current needs.

If you are making the decision to try natural products for the first time, or you are switching over your skincare products from summer to autumn, you might experience a transition phase known as skin detoxing. Detoxing can have some not so pleasant side effects and appear in several different ways depending on your skin type. The most common symptoms of skin detoxing are acne, redness, skin sensitivity, excessive oil production, or lack of oil production. This period could last from a couple of days to a couple of weeks depending on the type of change you are making. Keep in mind if you are changing over to natural products for the first time this period may last a little longer.

Below are Lemongrass Products that can help each detox symptom your skin may experience. They may not cure them 100%; however they will act as an aid until your skin adjusts.

Weekly Facial Spa: 7 Steps to Combat Winter Dry Skin

The winter cold and wind can take the glow from your skin, robbing it of moisture, making your face feel tight and look dull, and leaving your lips flaky and peeling. If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and felt like you just can’t seem to apply enough moisturizing crème or you need more blush than you normally apply, you might just need to treat yourself to a facial spa. If you have dry, flaky skin, your makeup and face crème sit on top of that dry layer. Think of it as applying a coat of fresh, new paint to a piece of wood on top of old, dry and peeling paint. The new paint can’t soak into the wood, and the skin works much the same.

Follow the 7 steps below to bring the radiance back to your face:

Step 1: Cleanse. Using your favorite Lemongrass Spa Products’ facial cleansing gel or bar soap, gently cleanse your face and neck. Always include your neck in any facial regime.

Step 2: Steam. Steam helps to lift and separate the dead, rough and flaky areas from your skin and open your pores. Place a warm, wet washcloth on your face and neck. Using a larger cloth like a hand towel allows you to cover the neck as well. You should not experience any discomfort while steaming. Make sure your cloth is not too hot before applying to your face by testing it on a tender portion of your arm like the wrist or inside of the elbow. Let the cloth remain on your face and neck for 5-10 minutes.

Step 3: Exfoliate. Remove the cloth and while your skin is still moist, begin to exfoliate using Microdermabrasion Crème.  Be gentle. It’s easier to judge your pressure when you apply with your fingertips. Work in a circular motion. Your skin is warm and soft and your pores are open from the steam, so it will not take much pressure to exfoliate. Let the product do the work, not the pressure. Be sure to hit the areas where dry skin can build up like the corners of the nose and avoid around the tender eye area. Rinse and pat dry with a soft towel.
