Organizing Your Business for the New Year

Can you believe the first month of 2016 is already coming to a close? A new year signifies rebirth, renewal, revitalization…and reorganization! Spring-cleaning gets all the reorganizing glory, but the start of a new year is an excellent time to regroup. As you’re re-evaluating and resetting goals and resolutions, spending a little time reorganizing (or in some cases getting organized) your business allows you to focus your attention on pampering your customers. Regardless of your businesses goals, these tips can help get you ready for an influx of new customers and hostesses this year.

Customers

Keeping track of your customers’ wish lists and past orders is an important part of growing your business, as well as a means to providing superior customer service. One way to keep customers organized is by creating a rotating “tickler file” for when to contact customers. There are a few different ways you could do this, and you’ll find a system that works for you. One low-tech method is to keep an index card for each customer with basic contact information and frequency of contact. For example, the two of you may have decided you’ll touch base every other month for re-ordering. If they’re a new customer, we suggest calling within two days of the party to tell her how much you appreciate the order and again in two weeks (or after you get the shipping notification in your backoffice) to make sure she has received her products. If you’d rather go high-tech, utilize your phone’s calendar/reminder function to notify you when it’s time to make your customer calls. As you get to know your customers and their ordering needs, you’ll find a contact frequency that works for them. A few reasons outside of reorders your customers might want to hear from you are holidays, personal events, like anniversaries and birthdays, flash sales and specials on their favorite products.

Taxes

I can’t give you tax advice, but I can give you a few tips to making tax-time a little easier. Jennifer Dusza, our Consultant Relations Manager, recommends the “envelope system” to keep everything organized. At the beginning of each month start a business expense envelope, and when the month’s over, close it up, file it and start an envelop for the next. At the end of the year, ideally, you would have twelve large envelopes with all of your business expenses. Your tax professional can advise you on exactly what you should save and track for your business, but here a few ideas:

Olive Oil: From Dinner Table to Beauty Counter

Olive oil’s lush history is as deep and rich as the golden hued substance itself. Native to Mediterranean countries, ancient cultures used olive oil for a variety of every day purposes such as food, fuel, beauty and possibly currency, and evidence suggests production began over 5,000 years ago. Revered for its health benefits, olive oil is the number one recommended fat for cooking and is now a staple of modern kitchens, but olive oil’s health benefits don’t stop with food. Olive oil is used to maintain the health of skin, nails and hair.

Moisturizer

Dry skin leads to redness, flaking and cracking, especially in dry climates. Olive oil’s ability to penetrate deep into the skin to deliver nutrients and hydration restores skin’s suppleness. Olive oil paired with a gentle exfoliant like sea salt or sugar also helps renew skin’s natural glow by removing dead cells without stripping skin of its natural oils.

5 Skincare Myths Answered

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. Now that we are all settling back into our routines, most of us are setting out to achieve our New Year’s resolutions. Whether it is to be more fit, find more time for yourself or eat healthier one of the easiest resolutions you can achieve is better skin!

Since there are many skincare myths, sometimes it can discourage people from starting a great skincare routine. Below I am going to answer some of the most common myths to help put your mind at ease.

Myth #1 You should only use oil-free products on oily skin.

It is now known that using oil on oily skin can help bring balance to the skin. People who have oily skin tend to strip it of all its natural oils and in return the skin overcompensates and produces more oil. This can be a tough cycle to break. If you are dealing with oily skin it is acceptable to use an oil-free product during the day and use oil at night. During the day you can obtain the benefits of matte skin by using an oil-free moisturizer and at night you can focus on rebalancing your skin with oil. Grape seed and jojoba oil are great for oily skin and those emollients are in our Tea Tree Face Crème.

Myth #2 Skin should be “squeaky-clean” or “tight” after washing.

2015 Year in Review

From revealing a brand new magazine-style catalog, to launching a line of certified organic essential oils, to being named to the Top 100 Women Owned Companies for the second time, 2015 has been an incredible year for growth and opportunity. Here's our 2015 year in review.

Products

The introduction of innovative new products is one of the key elements in engaging our customers and creating excitement for our sales consultants. Sheer Minerals BB Crème (Beauty Balm) was a huge hit with our customers and consultants. This lightweight tinted moisturizer was offered in five shades to provide a ‘liquid foundation’ to those who prefer it. Inspired by the Pantone Color of the Year, Merlot Organic Crème Lipstick and Marsala Blush quickly became favorites among makeup wearers. An essential oil collection, complete with Fractionated Coconut Oil and rollerball vials for mixing blends, was introduced in the summer. Tea Tree, Lemon, Lavender, Peppermint single oils plus Immune Boost, Balancing Act and Mint Revival blends were offered to customers, in addition to many essential oil products we’ve been selling for years. We launched a revolutionary Prebiotic Facial Wash and Facial Mist at our annual convention in July. In addition to the popular Prebiotic Body Wash, this organic, GMO-free product works on a molecular level by stimulating good microorganisms on the skin and promoting collagen production. Prebiotic Foaming Liquid Soap was introduced in four varieties including Mandarin Orange, Candy Cane, Tea Tree with Citrus and Unscented.

We are nearing the end of 2015 and while Pantone has announced their colors of the year for 2016, I don’t think we are going to say goodbye to Marsala anytime soon. Our Marsala Blush and Merlot Organic Crème Lipstick belong in our Sheer Minerals Hall of Fame! Classics transcend trends.

However, now that Pantone has announced their new colors, you can expect the fashion and design worlds will follow suit in makeup, clothing, accessories and home décor. The 2016 Pantone colors of the year are (drumroll please….) Rose Quartz and Serenity.  Pantone threw us all for a loop when they announced the 2016 colors of the year; it’s the first time ever two complementing hues have been chosen. Rose Quartz is a cool soft pink reminiscent of the palest part of a rose petal. Serenity is a light fluffy powder blue, like a baby blanket. Together they look like sugary, airy cotton candy.

The following trends for 2016 are perfectly in tune with these new colors:

Ingredient Spotlight: 3 Benefits of Cocoa Butter

Richly hued with the faint scent of chocolate, cocoa butter (Theobroma Cacao) is the naturally occurring fat in cocoa pods that is extracted by cold-pressing dried and fermented cocoa beans. Cocoa pods also produce cocoa liquor and cocoa powder, used in the production of delicious chocolate. Purportedly used by the Aztec and Mayan civilizations for medicinal and dietary reasons, cocoa butter is now found in cosmetics and skincare for the following skin nurturing benefits.

Anti Aging

High concentrations of fatty acids (oleic, palmitic and stearic), vitamins (A, B1, B2 and B3) and antioxidants (vitamins C and E) fight free radicals. Free radicals cause tissue damage, increasing the signs of aging such as wrinkles and sagging skin. Fatty acids also help cocoa butter penetrate the top layer of skin, lending to cocoa butter’s nickname, “ultimate moisturizer”.

Regeneration

Cocoa butter has been used for centuries to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Although there is limited research regarding the correlation between cocoa butter and disappearing scars, a few small studies showing the potential for cocoa butter to maintain skin’s suppleness and elasticity. Because hydration is known for improving the appearance of skin, applying moisturizing cocoa butter can be effective in reducing scars.

The Art of Aromatherapy Part 3: Essential Oil Uses

Used across the globe for centuries, plant essences played a substantial role in medicinal preparations and religious ceremonies. These essences evolved to what we now know as essential oils. While still used for medical and religious purposes, essential oils developed a contemporary following for skincare and household applications. Here are some tips and recipes for practicing with essential oils. Let me know in the comments how you use your favorite essential oils.

Diffusing

Create a romantic, uplifting, relaxing or other desirable ambiance by diffusing essential oils in your home. People diffuse oils purely for the love of a scent, aromatherapy benefits or both. Whatever your reason, it is recommended you use an electric nebulizer or diffuser (steam or fan) to maintain the molecular integrity of the compound because essential oils can breakdown if exposed to heat. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the diffuser, per the unit’s instruction, to enjoy the aroma throughout your house. As an added bonus, a study published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy suggests diffusing essential oils could be effective in fighting certain air born bacteria.

Skin Care

Customize your Lemongrass Spa products with your special essential oil blend by adding essential oils to an unscented product. Here’s a guideline to help you make your own essential oil creation.

4 Practical Tips for Success

Direct sales offers a unique entrepreneurship opportunity for women and men from a variety of social and economic backgrounds. They join for a myriad of reasons such as flexible schedules, extra income and “me time”. While success is different for everyone, there are a few tips that can be followed to create a lucrative home business. Jennifer Pizza, a Lemongrass Spa Consultant from Maryland, gives real-life examples of how to use these tips for your business.

Jennifer enjoyed attending home parties but “never considered being the one ‘running the show’.” After attending her sister’s Lemongrass Spa party and learning about clean products, she decided it was time to make a change for her family. With no prior experience in direct selling, Jennifer’s initial goal was for her family to live healthier and free from potentially harmful chemicals; she never fathomed where this change would lead her. In about four months Jennifer promoted to Director and earned a $1000 bonus. Within six months she earned the “High Jump” [highest honor in Lemongrass Spa’s previous Jump Start program], which included product bonuses, a necklace and massage at a local spa. At nine months Jennifer earned an all-expenses paid vacation for herself and her husband. Then at the end of her first year she ranked number nine in sales in the entire company.  Jennifer said "my first year with Lemongrass Spa was AMAZING!”

Tip 1: Set goals.

Jennifer’s overall goal was to provide healthier products for her family, primarily because one of her daughters has allergies and skin sensitivities. Her personal business goal was to earn the Spa Destination trip for herself and her husband. “Having three kids doesn't leave much time for a getaway, or money to afford it. The experience was everything we thought it would be and more! We were able to relax and re-connect,” Jennifer stated. Each month she sets small goals for her business that will lead her to her big-picture goals, such as earning the 2016 Spa Destination trip to Mexico.

Tip 2: Create a work schedule.

Sheer Minerals Makeup Party

Beauty products and makeup are such a fun and personal gift to give for the holidays, why not have a glitzy, glamorous Sheer Minerals Makeover party? Much of the feedback and many posts I read indicate a level of intimidation when it comes to holding a Sheer Minerals Party. You do not need to be a makeup artist or even wear makeup to hold a successful party. If you give women the opportunity to get their hands on the makeup and experiment with it, the party virtually holds itself. Busy women often get caught in a beauty rut. We do the same look, buy the same products and stick with the same routine for years and years out of pure habit and staying in a comfort zone. Not only are you providing your guests with the time and opportunity to try new looks, products and colors on themselves, you are giving them great gift ideas for their friends and family. Below are some tips to help you conduct a successful Sheer Minerals Holiday party, regardless of your level of experience with makeup.

1.  Set up stations to avoid crowding and confusion. These should include:

*Makeup removal and facial preparation including warm washcloths, eye makeup remover, moisturizer and primer. *tip: provide a Muddy Mates Mixing & Application Tray, hand mirror (or have larger mirrors at each station) and sample brushes for each guest to keep everything sanitary and allow for mixing. Include a wish list and a pen to keep track of favorites. Encourage before and after selfies that they can share with you if they are comfortable.

*Cover up. Include all 3 concealing sticks, mineral cover-up, and sheer veils.

*Foundations and blush. Include BB crème samples or pumps and mineral foundation, blushes and setting spray.

With Love, from Lemongrass Spa

Breakthroughs in cancer research combined with early detection education and improvements with treatment options have brought cancer out from behind a curtain of uncertainty and fear. However, openly and bravely fighting this devastating disease does not negate the horrendous psychological and physical effects of treatment.

Inspired by one of our Consultant’s father’s journey through cancer treatments, the Loving Care Gift Set was born to help provide relief from dry, itchy skin, brittle nails and radiation burns, just a few of the superficial effects of chemotherapy and radiation. The three products contained in the set include Healing Elements Balm, Organic Skin & Nail Balm plus a jar of Ultra Hydrating Body Crème.

Last year, in honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lemongrass Spa sent over 50 Loving Care Gift Sets to women, men and children battling any type of cancer. Touched by the numerous heroic, devastating and hopeful stories, this October, Lemongrass Spa Products increased its goal to send at least 200 Loving Care Gift Sets to people receiving any type of cancer treatment. We have met our goal and are honored to send over 200 gift sets to recipients around the country.

Natural Anti Aging Complex

Maintaining dewy, youthful skin is considered the top skincare concern for most women, while, according to popular men’s magazines, acne and dry skin top men’s skin care problems. Vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and other nutrients are needed to maintain suppleness and luminosity in both women and men. Outside of a balanced diet, serums are the perfect delivery system for providing the nutrients your skin needs. Serums apply a concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to the skin. Light and fast absorbing, these elixirs penetrate the inner layers of the dermis for a lasting effect and can be used with all skin types.

Lemongrass Spa enhanced its Green Tea Antioxidant and Organic Anti Aging Serums with an essential oil blend and anti aging complex to boost the rejuvenating effects. There are visible benefits of daily use of serum including softer, more supple skin, smoother appearance and natural vibrancy. Customers who have used the serums have noticed an improvement of overall elasticity of skin and less dryness, even in cold weather when used regularly. The Green Tea Antioxidant is a favorite among those with oily prone skin types and Organic Anti Aging (Oil) Serum is the preference for normal to dry skin types.

Essential Oil Blend

Rosemary: A natural toner to help balance skin and reduce dryness.

Spearmint: Menthol provides antiseptic properties, which can help heal skin ulcerations.

Marketing Your Direct Selling Business with Instagram

Last year my teenage daughter asked if she could get an Instagram account. This was an eye-opening and educational experience for our family as we learned a whole new way to communicate on social media with our kids and their friends. As teens moved away from Facebook and over to Instagram in large numbers last year, parents have another social media environment to monitor, with some added benefits if you’re open minded about learning a slightly different marketing approach. Instagram isn’t just for teens. Almost 80% of Instagram users are between 13-49, and 68% of the users are female.

After sitting down with my daughter for about fifteen minutes I was educated on setting up my profile, posting pictures and getting creative with #hashtags. From a teen perspective there are cool things to post on Instagram and very uncool things and now that we were following each other the last thing I wanted to do is appear as a stalker parent.   There were some abbreviations I needed to Google in order to understand what she and her friends were talking about: #goals, ttyl, TBT, OOTD, bae, cray, LYT and WTH. Now that I had the basics down I was off and running.

Because Instagram is picture and video driven (you can’t make a post without one) the visual stimulation when you scroll through the feed can become rather addictive. I found myself following gluten-free chefs, beach yoga instructors, natural skincare crafters, coffee drinkers, motivational speakers and crossfit athletes. Because IG sorts photos by hashtags, when you go to explore new people you’ll immediately gravitate toward people with common interests.

Creating Connections

Posting comments on Instagram is much like Facebook and you can easily engage with new people simply but making a positive comment on their photo. You can private message your friend on Instagram, too, which also requires attaching a photo to the initial message. Another way to engage with your friends is to add their IG name, for example @abc123, as a comment to a post, or tag them in a post. The next time your friend goes to their Instagram account they will see the post you intended for them to see. It goes without saying, if someone follows you, follow them back, unless of course you have reasons not to. Since about 70% of Instagram users check their feed at least once a day, post pictures regularly to keep followers engaged and interested. Follow and engage with people who have similar interests as you. For example, if you see a user who often posts about a healthy lifestyle and natural skin care, you may want to follow them.

Updating Your Skin Care for Fall

Cooler temperatures, light breezes and changing foliage signify the end of summer for much of the country, and with these arrives skin’s foe: dry air. Drier air can bring red, flaky skin and breakouts; for many of us, making a few small changes to our skin care routine will help to combat these changes.

Exfoliate

Dull skin is an unwanted effect of fun summer activities. Reveal radiant skin by sloughing off dead cells with an exfoliating product.

Face: If you aren’t already exfoliating your face, add a weekly facial polish to your routine or try a deeper scrub to minimize the damage done to your

skin with the Microdermabrasion Crème*.

Transitioning to a New Skin Care Regimen

Most people are hesitant when changing their skincare routine. Whether their current one is working or not, they fear that changing their products will have a negative impact on their skin. The truth is implementing different skincare products and ingredients into your routine are beneficial. Just like a personal trainer advises their clients to rotate their workouts so your muscles don’t become complacent, estheticians advise their clients to change their skincare routine. This allows the skin to receive different benefits from new products. Your skin is consistently changing and your skincare should be adjusting to reflect your skins current needs.

If you are making the decision to try natural products for the first time, or you are switching over your skincare products from summer to autumn, you might experience a transition phase known as skin detoxing. Detoxing can have some not so pleasant side effects and appear in several different ways depending on your skin type. The most common symptoms of skin detoxing are acne, redness, skin sensitivity, excessive oil production, or lack of oil production. This period could last from a couple of days to a couple of weeks depending on the type of change you are making. Keep in mind if you are changing over to natural products for the first time this period may last a little longer.

Below are Lemongrass Products that can help each detox symptom your skin may experience. They may not cure them 100%; however they will act as an aid until your skin adjusts.

Ingredient Spotlight: Coconut Oil

The coconut fruit has provided meat, water, milk and oil to tropical communities for thousands of years and has been deemed “The Tree of Life” by Asian and Pacific islanders for its extensive dietary and medicinal applications. Mentions of the medicinal benefits of the coconut can be found in ancient Sanskrit text, and coconut oil is used in Ayurvedic medicine, an alternative healing process from India estimated to be 5000 years old. Traditional medicinal applications of coconut oil include fevers, nausea, rashes, toothaches, ulcers, colds, lice, bruises and more.

At the end of World War II, coconut oil was found in the United States in the form of margarine, but it soon fell out of favor as a household staple due studies concluding all saturated fats increased cholesterol and risk for heart disease. It is now believed coconut’s unique combination of short and medium chained fatty acids, primarily lauric acid and myristic acid, precludes it from negatively impacting health.

Coconut oil isn’t just for cooking or alternative medicine; it’s one of the most widely used natural oils in personal care. Coconut oil is touted for its ability to do everything from repairing damaged hair to reducing wrinkles to blocking UV rays. Where there is little clinical evidence of coconut oil being a beauty miracle, there is plenty of antidotal evidence coconut oil is a master moisturizer and potent antioxidant.

Coconut oil is pressed from the seeds of the coconut palm tree and is comprised of fatty acids including lauric, linoleic, myristic, oleic, caprylic, capric, stearic and palmitric. Studies on the skin care benefits of these fatty acids lead skin care experts to believe coconut oil isn’t all hype. For example, lauric acid and caprylic acid could both be effective in fighting acne due to antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin E and vitamin D, potent antioxidants that protects skin from free radical damage, joins this fatty acid super group. Coconut oil penetrates the skin, making it the perfect vehicle to deliver the benefits of other natural oils and botanical extracts.

Nourish your body from head to toe with coconut oil by trying a few of these exfoliating, moisturizing and cleansing products:
